The Arc of a Lifelong Passion

For over thirty years, Christian Kliem has been captivated by the magic of a boomerang’s return. His journey began as a teenager, sparked by a television documentary that grew into a lifelong obsession. This passion led him to formally study.

Holztechnik (wood technique) and a unique form of "adventure pedagogy," blending the mastery of his material with a calling to teach. For more than 25 years, Berliner Bumerang has been the fulfillment of this vision, a place where the art of making and the joy of throwing are shared with the world.

The Workshop: Berlin's Creative Heart

Christian Kliem’s workshop is based in Berlin’s B.L.O. Ateliers — a former railway depot now buzzing with artists and makers who prize hands-on craftsmanship.

Amid the scent of birch, oak, and cherry, Kliem fine-tunes each boomerang, applying aerodynamics and gyroscopic physics with the precision of an engineer — and just a hint of playful mischief in the pursuit of the perfect flight.

A Philosophy of Sustainable Craft: "Gutes kommt zurück"

At the heart of Berliner Bumerang is a simple yet resonant philosophy: Gutes kommt zurück — “Good things come back.” It shapes every detail of Kliem’s work, setting it apart from mass-produced plastic toys.

He sources only FSC- and PEFC-certified woods from European forests, ensuring responsible forestry, and finishes each piece with natural, plant-based oils instead of chemical lacquers. The boomerang itself, with its graceful return, becomes both object and metaphor — a playful reminder of sustainability’s cyclical promise.

The Global Stage: The Venice Biennale

In 2015, Christian Kliem’s craft entered the realm of fine art when he was invited to the Venice Biennale. For eight months, he staged a daily performance from the roof of the German Pavilion, launching his handcrafted boomerangs into the Venetian sky.

The elegant arcs traced above the historic skyline became a striking dialogue between traditional craft and global culture. From this experience emerged the “Venezia” boomerang — its gondola-like curve both a technical design and a tribute to that moment — transforming a sporting good into a fragment of art history.

Sharing the Joy of the First Throw

A gifted teacher, Christian Kliem finds his greatest joy in sharing his passion with others.

His popular workshops, held monthly in his Lichtenberg studio, are an invitation for people of all ages and skill levels — from eight to ninety-nine — to experience the craft firsthand.

His mix of skill and mentorship draws enthusiasts from across Europe.

Tools for Flight and Meditation

The Berliner Bumerang collection is thoughtfully designed to offer the perfect instrument for every thrower. Each boomerang is more than a toy; it is a companion for moments of calm and focus.

Watching it rise, arc, and return creates a rhythm that draws you into the present moment — a moving meditation carried on the wind. With every throw and catch, there is a chance to find “total harmony with the wind and with the boomerang,” a balance of body, breath, and motion that is as restorative as it is joyful.
